The Sortmind Chronology
At the risk of polluting this blog with an imperfect and overly long document, I’m adding something that’s not meant to be read, but just perused in order to show the lengths an author has to go to nail down chronology. The Chronology file is one of three main files for Sortmind, the others being Characters and Facts. Those two files are equally long.
It’s possible that not every date in the Chronology document is as precise as it could be. I may have inadvertently left in dates corresponding to early drafts or cut chapters. Nevertheless, I wanted the file to be as accurate as possible to avoid plot conflicts.
Although year dates are mentioned nowhere in Sortmind, I used the year 2017 to establish the events of the novel, since I wanted to refer to precise days of the week. There’s no use having an eventful school day on a Saturday, for instance. The chronology contains dates back to 1945 for references to characters’ pasts, but below I’ve omitted everything except “2016” and “2017,” which comprise three-quarters of the Chronology file.
The novel opens on April 13, “2017.”

Wednesday 5/3: Oliver tells Sam he’ll do CTT this coming weekend.
Thursday 5/4: The Civil Service Trial Board tries to fire Morgenspiel. Morgenspiel claims to have suffered brain damage, apparently because some of the primitive hacker tools he downloaded off the Internet were wildly incompatible with Sortmind technology. Thursday 5/4: Duce ruminates on his life, the OTF, Oliver, etc., speaks to Perrine and Plill. Perrine knows of Duce’s 5/29 Mobilization plans for the Pledge of Resistance Rally. Duce does telepathic tablets, goes berserk, assaults Falpa and other women.

Tuesday 5/16: Oliver sends off UC application (trying to ignore the fuss over his story).
Tuesday 5/16 – Sunday 5/28: Knowing their code is broken, Thalia, Manfred, and Pierce go into hiding, beyond the 100 mile radius of Sortmind coverage, taking some other Cnzaarians with them. Other Cnzaarians are not yet compromised, but all but a few (for example, Starck, Charlene, Melanie, Caldwood, and Sylvester) do leave Canterra, returning only on 5/28.
Tuesday 5/16 – Sunday 5/28: Starck refuses to go into hiding with the other Cnzaarians, as he doesn’t want to go outside Sortmind radius coverage. He uses Sortmind to mask himself, but basically the Cnzaarians know he can’t reveal any secrets and Trantor officials know they can get more out of Sortmind than from Starck, so they don’t seriously pursue him.
Tuesday 5/16: Emersonn lectures Sam on CTT use (as he threatened to do on 5/13 at Grafton lunch).
Wednesday 5/17: Several students and faculty members call for Godwin’s expulsion, based on items about Toland and Godwin published in Sam’s story, seeking to deny him graduation in his last three weeks.

Saturday 5/20: Anna moves into Mrs. Dunn’s.
Sunday 5/21: The Watchdog addresses the issue of the mayor’s absence, noting the mayor’s office press releases about her needing a “vacation away from all the stress.” But also notes that this seems odd, unplanned.
Sunday 5/21: Oliver working on The Forest Preserve Incident: session #2 – all day on it. High realism. “The second version especially–where he’d learned to paint fully realistically–of Teresa lying in the reeds with her blouse and bra off, the sun on her breasts.”
Monday 5/22: Duce becomes a full-fledged Sortmind subscriber, and over the next week nears Mindwipe. “Man, I didn’t see it before, but that Sortmind has potential.”
Tuesday 5/23: Oliver working on The Forest Preserve Incident: session #3 – minor changes; still very Teresa-like.
Tuesday 5/23: The newspapers finally start probing the mayor’s absence. Certain people claim the mayor and Pierce ran off to have an affair, others that the mayor is an alien.
Tuesday 5/23: Anna discovers newspaper rumors, then Manfred calls and summons her to Chatterton. She knows the affair rumor is nonsense but still resents being summoned this way.

Sunday 5/28: Oliver working on The Forest Preserve Incident: version #7 – he admits it’s a mess, tries to repair it with even more abstraction, but it’s dull, tired, a worse mess. He’s giving up. He knocks off work on The Forest Preserve Incident to watch Duce’s speech at Sam’s.
Sunday 5/28 evening: Duce’s television speech: “Goddamn, but the truth is freedom! Goddamn, but the truth is ours! Goddamn, but we will die for the truth!”
Monday 5/29 noon-12:47 PM: Pledge of Resistance riots, Trantor Building assaulted, Sortmind crippled, Sam Mindwiped and commits suicide.
